MENISCAL PROCEDURES

The meniscus is a C-shaped soft cushion inside your knee. Each knee has two menisci – one on the inner side (medial) and one on the outer side (lateral). They help absorb shock and protect the bones.

It is a surgery to remove the damaged part of the meniscus. If the tear is too large or cannot be repaired or cannot heal, the doctor removes the torn portion to reduce pain and improve knee function.

It is done when:
• The meniscus is torn and is causing pain, swelling, or locking.
• The tear cannot heal by itself or by repair
• Other treatments, like rest or physiotherapy, did not work

The surgery is done with a small camera (arthroscopy). The doctor makes small 4-5mm cuts around the knee uses specialized instruments to trim or remove the torn part of the meniscus and clean the joint. It usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Meniscal resection or menisectomy is relatively simple and safe surgery, it can also be done as day care procedure.

The surgery is done using arthroscopy (a small camera inside the knee). The doctor makes tiny 4-5mm cuts, and using specific instruments like stitches or anchors to hold the torn meniscus together, so it can heal.

Generally meniscal repair is considered safe procedure.

Generally, Dr.sudhan individually takes you through a specialized rehabilitation protocol. Initially the repair is protected by non-weight bearing followed by partial and full weight bearing. Similarly, graded range of motion were followed and usually takes 6 to 9 months for full recovery

A meniscal cyst is a small fluid-filled swelling that forms near the meniscus in the knee. It often happens when the meniscus is torn and fluid leaks out, collecting in the nearby tissue.

Meniscal cysts usually happen due to a tear in the meniscus. The tear allows joint fluid to move out and form a bubble-like cyst. This can happen from injury, twisting, or wear and tear in the knee.

• A small lump or swelling near the joint line
• Pain or pressure while bending the knee
• Tightness or discomfort during activity
• Sometimes, symptoms of a meniscal tear likelocking or clicking might also be present.

It is a simple procedure to drain or remove the cyst. It is usually done along with treatment of the meniscus tear, such as trimming or repairing the torn meniscus. This stops the cyst from filling up again.

The doctor uses arthroscopy (a small camera surgery) to drain or clean out the cyst. Trim or repair the torn meniscus so fluid doesn’t collect again.

Meniscal cyst decompression along with meniscal repair is a safe procedure which can cause a huge relief of symptoms to the patient.
